A Dirt Road / July 2021
Jacob, Peanut, and I drove down a long dirt road for an hour, through a small river on the roadway, breaking the bumper of his Volkswagen Jetta in the process of getting here. Sometimes we push our adventures too far, to the point of expensive damage. There is always a risk involved in traveling to secluded destinations in the area.
These hidden gems are precious. The pain and loss we go through to reach these remote places is worth it in the end, to truly escape. The road is far from the traffic of Seattle hikers who crowd the trails of North Bend and Gold Bar. Trails that trend on Instagram quickly transform into places full of litter and used toilet paper because of those who are not educated on trail etiquette and Leave No Trace.
I urge all who read this to think twice about tagging your trail. Washingtonians- please consider the possible damage that could result from blogging, selling, instagramming, or sharing trail names for publicity or money. After all, hidden gems are so rewarding to find. I believe that these places must continue to be difficult to get to, which means that we should oppose the implementation of better roads, WiFi, and infrastructure in places like this. The dirt makes it what it is. Nature untrodden.
